Radio Silence/Radio Noise
Jun. 23rd, 2009 11:24 amI realise there's been some radio silence on my end for the past couple of weeks.
It's more due to the fact that I hate the process of what I have to go through just to get internet connection. I usually try my best to get knitting done during the day, and then move on to the fun stuff at night. Which usually means, that to get my beloved internet connection, I have to pack up the lappy, walk to the far parking lot, drive down the long dirt road, un-jimmy lock the gate, drive through, re-jimmy lock the gate, drive into town, go to the library, set up and sit outside with the bugs to get a semi-decent connection.
In other words: It's a pain.
I figured out that if I go during the day when the library is open, I have a tendency to just stay all day. It's air conditioned, and indoors, and sans bugs, which is delightful. But that doesn't lead to much productivity.
The show has been somewhat slow. Evidenced by the fact that I took the last two weekends profit, and made a huge payment on my car. It was either that or play the ever -exciting game of "Dodge the Repo Man". Fairly certain that, while entertaining, and fun for the whole family, I'd rather pass on the whole deal and keep my little Rollerskate of Doom.
My attitude, and moods have been all across the spectrum of late as well, but I'm pretty sure it's a growing process. 32, and still learning how to be an adult. It's like being 19 again, except without the added benefit of claiming naivite.
That being said, I'm working on making things better. Making the car payment has helped a bunch to alleviate some anxiety. Plus I have a ring order and some supply orders that should go through next week, if this weekend doesn't suck fantastically.
I did however, break down, and buy a 3G card. I am in love.
I'm also blogging from inside my booth. Having internet is going to make things so much easier on so many levels. I can now check my accounts, and place orders, and update the website, and post more photography. Plus the added benefit of being able to keep in contact with my friends. The difference in just one day has been HUGE.
This is a lonely show for me. There are perhaps maybe 4 or 5 people on site TOTAL that I really enjoy being around. I'm sure alot of this is because, well, I'm a bit removed. I generally don't understand other people. Especially here. Most people on the road, and at this show, enjoy their libations of the herbal persuasion, and enjoy their daily 6-pack of beer. And in the campground there's a nice healthy dose of drama-llama that i'd rather not know about, because then I'd have to tell the llamas that I just don't care. I just don't care who is sleeping with who, and who said what, and who fucked up, etc. etc.
I got on the road because of the art. Because I wanted to make a living being a creator. And living by my creations. Not to sound "Old School", but more and more I think our new travelers are joining because it's an easy way to get access to drugs and booze, and only having to work on the weekend.
Which brings me to my next stream of thought. I'm not certain why.. but I feel revitalized, these past couple of days. I feel.... happy. I'm going to blame the internet, and the fact that I don't feel so lonely now. But I want to bring The Art more sharply into focus. it's why I came into this world, it's time to push it into the light.
I'd like to get on it, with posting more photos of my works, as a document for the new designs that I've been coming up with, and also as a way to show that they exist. Show and Tell time if you will. Which also reminds me i need to e-mail photos to a certain LJ-er. Gods I'm lame sometimes.
A complete switch of topics. The love life? Not that there really is one... but someone quoted something that resonated true with me:
"Never make someone a priority who only makes you an option."
I leave you with a couple of photos.

Date: 2009-06-23 07:33 pm (UTC)I think most of them are in it for that. And that happens every year. The ones that stick around are the ones that are in it for the art, community, lifestyle or what have you. Those make up the next generation of booth owners. The rest of them will gradually filter out and be replaced by newer newbies doing the same thing.
It's all a cycle. The difference is that you're now officially a veteran and you're watching from the outside what you were once in the middle of.
The thing that really changes is the management's response to the crowd's response to the economy. One big indicator is the amount of imports allowed at shows that were once all about the hand made, and the downturn in overall quality in all sorts of areas as management tries to make a bigger buck, or save an extra one. But that's any business in our present society that either can't or won't afford to suck it up a little for principle.
You do what you do and to hell with the rest of them.

Date: 2009-06-24 02:44 am (UTC)And OH! Don't get me started on the imports topic. There's a guy next to me at this show that has a "riveted chainmail shirt" ( right NEXT to me.. classy right? Good planning Kentucky!)..
Anyways.. he's telling everyone that he "made this shirt by hand and pounded the rings himself.. it took him 120 hours blah blah blah!".." When it's obvious that this was a machine manufactured shirt, imported from Pakistan, or India.
What is he selling this shirt for? $200 dollars. Yeah. "Hand crafted" my ass. Basic economics should tell anyone that if you spend 120 hours on a project, AND put in the cost of materials, that you're not going to sell it for $200. UGH! And there isn't dick I can do about it. At this point I'm just going to let the uneducated patrons make their own decisions and keep my pretty mouth shut.

Date: 2009-06-24 02:42 pm (UTC)But look at it this way, the kind of people who will recognize art from cheap shit are the kind you want your brain babies to go home with anyway. If you can't be rolling in cash, at least you can content yourself with that.

Edited to add how much I love that it looks like there is a disembodied hand trying to steal your cereal.

Date: 2009-06-24 07:08 pm (UTC)I've Melded with my lappy. I need to get on it with production, but keep getting distracted by the internet.
If I were anywhere remotely near you, I would totally make a halter for you. Maybe I can make a random trip to Kazakhstan in the next couple of years!
